Imagining America

As an active member of "Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life, " Rutgers played host to its fifth annual national conference in September 2005. Imagining America is a consortium of seventy colleges and universities that promote campus-community partnerships in the arts, humanities, and design. Organized by the Office of the Associate Vice President of Academic and Public Partnerships in the Arts & Humanities, the conference was attended by close to 200 artists, community leaders, and scholars all dedicated to using the intellectual and artistic capacities of the academy for the public purposes, in other words-public scholarship. Entitled "Public Engagement and Intercultural Practice: New Democratic Spaces for Scholars and Artists," conference attendees heard presentations from leading scholars and community partners on topics such as strategies for universities to engage with new waves of immigrants, what defines excellence in campus-community partnerships, and the transformative role faculty play in leading efforts to increase diversity at their institutions. The main point of the conference was to emphasis that community engagement and public scholarship are legitimate forms of scholarship; and practitioners of public scholarship should be recognized and rewarded as such.
The conference provided Rutgers with an opportunity to share some of its most innovative projects sponsored by various university units including: the Associate VP for Academic and Public Partnerships' Bildner Faculty Diversity Initiative; the Brodsky Center for Innovative Print and Paper; the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum; The Stedman Gallery; the Institute for Research on Women; and the Institute of Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience as well as to hear from other innovators from around the nation.
